“The chin is profoundly underappreciated as an element of facial beauty. A recessed chin makes the nose appear larger, the neck shorter, and the profile unbalanced — regardless of how attractive every other feature is. Conversely, a well-projected chin frames the entire face and makes the nose appear proportionate even without rhinoplasty. I show digital imaging to every rhinoplasty patient with a recessed chin — the profile transformation is often the most dramatic thing they see in the consultation.”
What chin augmentation can do for you
Chin augmentation corrects a recessed profile by adding permanent structural projection — either via a custom silicone implant or sliding genioplasty. The procedure rebalances the entire profile in a way that rhinoplasty alone cannot achieve.
- Love your profile — a projected chin is the single feature that most reshapes the side view of the face.
- Stronger jawline from every angle — an implant-supported chin anchors the jawline front-to-back, not just straight on.
- Permanent in one outpatient procedure — medical-grade implant sized precisely to your face; no filler maintenance, ever.
- Balances your facial features — nose, lips, and neck all read in better proportion once chin projection is correct.
- Matched to your anatomy, not a template — feminine or masculine shape, size scaled to your bone structure — never oversized.

Understanding chin augmentation
What chin augmentation is
Chin augmentation corrects a recessed profile by adding permanent structural projection — through either a custom silicone implant or a sliding genioplasty. The procedure rebalances the entire profile in a way that rhinoplasty alone cannot.
Who chin augmentation is for
If any of the following describes you, chin augmentation may be worth exploring:
Note: Approximately 30% of rhinoplasty candidates also benefit from simultaneous chin augmentation. Dr. Truesdale evaluates the relationship between nose and chin during every rhinoplasty consultation — the right chin projection meaningfully changes how the rest of the profile reads.
What makes Dr. Truesdale’s approach different
Dr. Truesdale’s approach to every procedure reflects a consistent set of principles — the same standards that inform every consultation, every surgical plan, and every post-operative follow-up.
Restraint, Not Over-Correction
The most over-done procedures in facial aesthetics are over-done because someone kept going past the right stopping point. Dr. Truesdale's rule: when the result is right, stop — even if more could technically be done. For chin augmentation, that means selecting the smallest implant that achieves the right balance — never the largest.
The Artist's Eye
Before becoming a surgeon, Dr. Truesdale was a trained portrait artist. That lens shapes every decision — proportion, light, shadow, the relationship between every feature — in a way purely clinical training alone does not. For chin work, that lens reads the entire profile and the front-view jawline simultaneously, sizing the implant to harmonize both.
Personal, Start to Finish
Every consultation, every surgical plan, every procedure — performed personally by Dr. Truesdale. No delegation to coordinators, PAs, or residents. Dr. Truesdale is personally involved every step of the way. Every chin implant is placed and the pocket sized by Dr. Truesdale. The fit determines the result.
Natural Is Non-Negotiable
The only acceptable outcome is one that no one can identify as a procedure — a result that reads as a better version of you. No pulled look, no frozen expression, no obvious work. The chin-augmentation goal: a stronger profile that reads as genetics, not as obvious enhancement.
“Balance is the rule of the face. A weak chin imbalances everything — including how the nose reads.”
— Dr. Carl Truesdale, MD

From first consultation to final reveal
We always tell our patients to ‘trust the process.’ You are in good hands on every step of the journey to your unique masterpiece.
Consultation
Personal session with Dr. Truesdale — facial analysis, honest assessment of candidacy, and a clear plan for what the procedure can and cannot achieve.
Planning
Medical clearance, pre-operative instructions, and a personalized plan Dr. Truesdale reviews with you before the day of the procedure.
Procedure Day
Implant placed through a small hidden incision either inside the mouth or under the chin under MAC (Monitored Anesthesia Care) with IV sedation — gentle, deep sedation comparable to a colonoscopy, administered and monitored throughout by a hand-selected, board-certified anesthesiologist. Expect swelling that may peak or briefly increase on Days 3–4 — this is normal. If at any point the implant feels loose or dislodged, contact the office immediately.
Healing
Regular diet as tolerated. For intraoral incisions: salt-water or mouthwash rinse after every meal; avoid sharp or crunchy foods. Sutures removed at the Day 7 follow-up.
Contour Settles
Most swelling resolved. Chin projection and jawline shape becoming visible.
Look and Feel Like a Masterpiece
A defined, balanced jawline that reads as yours only better.
Individual timelines vary. Dr. Truesdale sets realistic, patient-specific expectations during your consultation — not exaggerated claims.

What happens on surgery day
Chin augmentation adds structure where the chin is recessed, so the nose, lips and neck read in better proportion. Here is what the day looks like for you.
-
01Before you go in
You arrive at True Surgical Center having had nothing to eat or drink after midnight. You meet your anesthesiologist, and Dr. Truesdale goes over the plan with you before you go into the operating room.
-
02A small, hidden incision
Dr. Truesdale makes a small incision either inside the mouth or under the chin. Which one depends on your implant, and he tells you before surgery.
-
03The pocket and the implant
A pocket is made directly on the bone, beneath its lining (the periosteum), and Dr. Truesdale sizes it himself. The implant is matched to your face and your bone structure: the smallest one that brings your profile into balance, never the largest.
-
04When a sliding genioplasty is the better choice
When a large change in projection is needed, or the chin is short from top to bottom, a sliding genioplasty moves your own chin bone instead of adding an implant. Dr. Truesdale explains which approach suits your anatomy at your consultation.
-
05Closing and going home
The incision is closed with sutures, which Dr. Truesdale removes at your Day 7 visit. You go back to your hotel or home the same day with an adult who stays with you.

Chin augmentation recovery, week by week
This is the same protocol our patients receive in writing before surgery. The detailed instructions below come straight from it, so they change only when Dr. Truesdale changes them.
Swelling and bruising are normal, and it may be hard to open your mouth at first; normal movement returns within a few days. Swelling can briefly increase on Days 3 and 4. Sleep on your back with your head raised on 2 to 3 pillows, and ice 20 minutes on and 20 off for 5 days to a week. Eat a regular diet, avoiding sharp, crunchy and hard foods; if your incision is inside your mouth, rinse with salt water or mouthwash after every meal. Dr. Truesdale removes your sutures on Day 7.
Keep your head raised when you sleep through the end of week 2. Light cardio from Day 14.
No bending, heavy lifting or straining until 3 weeks; heavier exercise then, once Dr. Truesdale clears you. Avoid alcohol and salt while you heal. SPF 50 and limited sun for 6 weeks.
Tightness and numbness are normal and may last 2 to 3 months. Full healing can take up to 4 months. Follow-ups at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months.

Chin augmentation risks, and how we keep you safe
Every operation carries risk. Dr. Truesdale goes through the risks that apply to your plan at your consultation, and each one is written in the consent you read and sign. For chin augmentation, the consent lists:
- Malposition. The implant may shift or sit unevenly and may need repositioning or removal.
- Extrusion. The implant may come through an incision or thin the skin over it.
- Infection of the Implant. Infection around the implant is possible and may mean the implant has to be removed.
- Numbness. Numbness of the lip, chin or cheek is possible; it may be temporary or permanent.
- Bone Change. Bone change under the implant over time is possible.
- Visible or Firm Implant. An implant that can be seen or felt, or firmness from scar tissue around it, is possible.
- Lower Lip Movement. A change in how the lower lip moves is possible after a chin implant.
- Chin Pad Droop. After a chin implant, the soft tissue of the chin may droop (sometimes called a witch’s chin).
- Teeth. Injury to the roots of the teeth is possible when the implant is placed through the mouth.
Risks of any operation
- Bleeding. Bleeding during or after surgery is possible. A collection of blood under the skin (hematoma) may need drainage or a return to the operating room, and severe bleeding may need emergency treatment or a blood transfusion.
- Infection. Infection is possible and may need antibiotics, drainage or further surgery.
- Bruising and Swelling. Bruising and swelling are expected. They may last several weeks, and swelling or discoloration may persist longer.
- Scarring. Every incision or entry point leaves a permanent scar. A scar may be raised, widened, darker, lighter or more visible than expected, and takes at least 3 months to mature.
- Keloid or Raised Scar. Itching, thickening, pain or a growth along any incision can be the first sign of a keloid (a thick, raised scar). Let us know right away so it can be injected with a steroid to stop the keloid from forming. A keloid is more likely if you have had one before and may need further injections or treatment.
- Change in Skin Sensation. Numbness, tingling or a change in skin sensation around the treated areas is possible; it may be temporary or permanent.
- Delayed Healing. Delayed healing or separation of an incision is possible and much more likely with nicotine in any form.
- Allergic Reactions. Allergic reactions to tape, sutures, skin cleansers, latex or medications are possible.
- Blood Clots. Blood clots in the legs or lungs (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism) are possible and more likely with longer surgery; your surgical team uses the clot-prevention plan chosen for you.
- Anesthesia. Risks of anesthesia and sedation are possible; the anesthesia provider reviews them with you separately.
- Pain. Pain after surgery is expected and should settle over several days; pain that lasts longer is possible.
- Result and Revision. A result that does not meet your expectations is possible: healing differs between people, no result is guaranteed, and a revision may be advised, with the fees described in your patient policy.
- Serious Complications. Serious complications, including death, are possible with any surgery or anesthesia.
- Heart and Lung Problems. Heart or lung problems, such as pneumonia or an irregular heartbeat, are possible after surgery and anesthesia.
- Medication Side Effects. Side effects of the medications used during and after surgery, such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness or trouble urinating, are possible.
- Injury to Deeper Structures. Injury to deeper structures, such as nerves, blood vessels, muscles or glands, is possible.
- Persistent Sutures. A deeper stitch may work its way to the surface and need to be removed.

Chin Augmentation FAQs
Bring your own questions to consultation — Dr. Truesdale personally answers every one. Below are the questions patients ask most often about chin augmentation.
The strongest candidates have a recessive chin that is throwing off your profile or making your neck look shorter than it actually is. Dr. Truesdale evaluates you personally in consultation and only recommends the procedure when it will genuinely help. If a different approach would serve you better, he’ll tell you that too.
Implant is simple, permanent, and reversible. Sliding genioplasty moves your own bone and is best when large projection changes are needed or the chin is vertically short. Filler is temporary and better suited to minor refinement. Dr. Truesdale walks through the options with digital imaging during consultation.
Most patients describe the discomfort as mild to moderate. Dr. Truesdale’s team is available throughout recovery — you are not managing discomfort on your own. See “What kind of anesthesia is used?” for details on intra-operative comfort. Dr. Truesdale’s team is available throughout recovery — you are not managing discomfort on your own.
Our surgical procedures utilize a patient-focused anesthesia technique known as MAC (Monitored Anesthesia Care) and IV Sedation, ensuring your maximum comfort and safety. This method provides a level of gentle, deep sedation comparable to the comfortable experience many patients have during a colonoscopy, which we have found helps make patients less fearful. The anesthesia is administered intravenously and meticulously monitored by a hand-picked group of board-certified anesthesiologists, who are dedicated to your well-being throughout your entire procedure.
Plan on 7–10 days of social downtime. Expect mild facial swelling and tightness around the chin that resolves over 2–3 weeks. Light cardio resumes at 2 weeks; most patients are cleared for strenuous exercise at about three weeks, at a follow-up visit. Your follow-up appointments along the way are conducted by Dr. Truesdale and our physician assistant, with Dr. Truesdale seeing you personally at the key milestones.
That’s the entire standard Dr. Truesdale designs for. A chin augmentation should balance the profile — never dominate it. Every patient is evaluated in a seated, relaxed state beforehand so the target is based on your real anatomy — never on an idealized template.
Permanent. A silicone chin implant does not need replacement. Sliding genioplasty repositions your own bone permanently.
Yes. A significant portion of Dr. Truesdale’s patients travel from across the United States and internationally. The process begins with a virtual consultation with Dr. Truesdale himself (not a coordinator), followed by in-person pre-procedure evaluation. Our patient-care coordinators help arrange travel, accommodations, and local transportation, and Dr. Truesdale’s team conducts virtual follow-ups after you return home.

Chin augmentation can be performed at any adult age once facial growth is complete — typically from age 18 onward. Many patients pursue it in their 20s and 30s for profile balance, and Dr. Truesdale also performs chin augmentation alongside facelift in patients in their 50s and 60s where restoring chin projection rejuvenates the jawline dramatically.
The cost of chin augmentation can vary based on the patient’s situation, including if it is a revision surgery and if this surgery will be combined with other surgeries or treatments. The total cost may include the surgeon’s fee, operating room fees, and anesthesia fees. At Truesdale Facial Plastic Surgery, we believe the surgeon’s philosophy and experience, and your comfort with him, are just as important as the final cost of the surgery. We can provide an approximate range for this procedure over the phone, and your patient care coordinator (PCC) will confirm the pricing for you after your consultation with Dr. Truesdale.
Dr. Truesdale removes your sutures at your Day 7 visit, whether your incision is inside your mouth or under your chin. Your follow-ups after that are at 1 month and 3 months.
A regular diet from the first day, as you tolerate it. Avoid sharp, crunchy and hard foods while you heal. If your incision is inside your mouth, rinse with salt water or an antiseptic mouthwash after every meal. It may be hard to open your mouth fully at first; normal movement returns within a few days.
Arrive at least a day before surgery and plan on about a week. Most patients stay 7 to 9 days so we can see them at their post-op visits, and fly home after their Day 7 visit. See traveling for surgery for hotels and aftercare.
Swelling that briefly increases on Days 3 and 4 is normal. Call us right away if you feel the implant move, or notice new tenderness, warmth, redness or swelling in one spot over it. See when to call us.
The consent you sign lists these possible complications: an implant that shifts, sits unevenly, comes through an incision or needs to be removed; infection around the implant; numbness of the lip, chin or cheek, which may be temporary or permanent; change in the bone under the implant over time; an implant that can be seen or felt; a change in how the lower lip moves; drooping of the soft tissue of the chin; and injury to tooth roots when the implant is placed through the mouth. It also lists the risks of any operation, including bleeding, infection, blood clots and the risks of anesthesia. Dr. Truesdale reviews each one with you. See chin augmentation risks and safety.
