What is a Deep Plane Facelift?
A deep plane facelift is a facelift that involves getting under the SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system) and vertically lifting the tissues to the desired position. Patients generally have minimal bruising because there’s less tension put on the skin than a typical facelift and there are fewer blood vessels in the deep plane. A deep plane facelift can provide a very natural, long-lasting result when performed by an expert facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Truesdale.
Dr. Truesdale’s technique involves the freeing of the facial muscle layer and neck muscle (platysma) to lift as one sheet vertically. The skin and muscle move together and avoids the need to separate the skin from the muscle to allow the most natural, long lasting outcome with the least amount of downtime possible. He will often perform liposuction to remove fat in the neck as well, depending on the patient.
Dr. Truesdale hides his incisions inside the hair and inside the ear cartilage (not on the face). The muscle (SMAS) is completely released from the ligaments in the face and neck which allow vertical movement of the tissues of the face. The muscle is secured and skin trimmed. He will then often elect to also graft fat into the face for a natural fill, restoring lost volume.

What is the Best Age for a Facelift?
Contrary to popular belief, there is no “best age” for a facelift. The average age of a facelift may be in the 50s, but there are plenty of people in their 40s and even 30s who would benefit from a facelift – it all depends on the amount of skin laxity and your goals. Those in their 60s and above can also be great candidates for facelifts, in fact, Dr. Truesdale has performed facelifts safely and beautifully on patients in their upper 80s who are in good health.
