Many of Dr. Truesdale’s patients travel from out of state and internationally. The question of when it is safe to fly after facial surgery is important to plan around well in advance. The answer depends on the specific procedure performed, the distance of the flight, and individual healing trajectory.
General Timing Guidelines
After a deep plane facelift or neck lift — and after the Masterpiece Surgery™, which combines them with other procedures — you can fly once your sutures are out at Day 7, and most patients fly home that day or the next. Rhinoplasty patients are cleared once the cast comes off, usually Day 5, and eyelid and lip lift patients once their sutures are out at Day 5. Fat transfer on its own leaves no sutures to remove, so flying the same or the next day is possible. The timing exists for two reasons: the risk of hematoma (elevated pressure and alcohol-induced vasodilation in the first days are risk factors) and the importance of being near your surgeon during the most critical healing window when complications are most likely to require attention.
Why Cabin Pressure Matters
Commercial aircraft are pressurized to the equivalent of roughly 6,000–8,000 feet above sea level. This lower pressure and humidity environment increases swelling and dehydration. It also increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the immediate post-operative period. For most facial plastic surgery patients, these risks are relatively low compared to body procedures, but they are not zero.
Planning Your Stay
Plan on about a week in Beverly Hills, arriving the day before surgery; face lift, neck lift and Masterpiece patients should plan to arrive at least a day before and to be here for 7 to 10 days. Face and neck lift patients have office visits on Day 1 (dressing removal), Day 2 (hemostatic net removal) and Day 3 (drain removal, if drains were placed; for men, drains usually come out on Day 5), and Dr. Truesdale removes sutures at Day 7 before you fly. A Day 5 visit that falls on a weekend moves to Monday, so your coordinator confirms the exact dates when you book. After returning home, follow-up is conducted virtually with Dr. Truesdale.
Flight-Day Recommendations
- Avoid alcohol the day before and day of travel
- Maintain head elevation on the plane (window seat with pillow support)
- Stay well hydrated throughout the flight
